It's midnight and i am writing this blog on what to and not to feed your dog, well that is because i just did a puppies adoption to some genuinely dog loving people but ignorant, unknowingly they had been feeding their dog chicken legs a complete NO-NO,their argument to me was "nothing happened to my dog!!!"Well after reading this blog i am hoping you would not feel the same.Your dog is your baby and depends on you to take care of him or her,so basically its our right or wrong decisions made that is lived or suffered by our babies. So lets be responsible parents and make their dependability on us worth it,what say!!
Some Foods which are edible for humans, and even other species of animals, can pose hazards for dogs because of their different metabolism. Some may cause only mild digestive upsets, whereas others can cause severe illness and even death. The following food item should not be fed to dogs. This list is ,ofcourse ,incomplete i cannot possibly list everything your dog should not eat,but remember IT IS BETTER TO HOLD YOUR DOGS TEMPTATION THAN TO NEVER BE ABLE TO HOLD HIM BACK.
Items to avoid & Reasons to avoid
Alcoholic beverages:-
Can cause intoxication,coma and death
Baby food :-
Can contain onion powder, which can be toxic to dogs(please see onion below). Can also result in nutritional deficiencies,if fed in larger amounts.
Bone from all meat & fish:-
Highly posess choking risk and can cause obstruction or lacteration of the digestive system. There have been many cases of dog death due to giving bones or chicken legs it can cause blood paasing from their stool and a lot of other gastrointestinal problems. This is widely followed wrongs by ignorant people as they think"oh nothing happened to my dog" or "what about strays getting to eat only bones"well mongriels or as the so called strays are much stronger to pedigrees due to genetic history apart from that even for them it is not good and can result the same although the fact is Canines in the wild who eat bones have the benefit of consuming hair &hide too, which have been found to "pad" the bone fragments andb aid in their passing.
Cat food :-
Generally too high in protein and fats(excess protein is bad for kidney)
Chocolate, coffee & other caffeine related products:-
Contain caffeine, theobromine or theophyliine, which can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous system.Although as treats better to restict it on rare occasions on small quantities.
Citrus oil extracts :-
Can cause vomitting
Grapes and Raisins:-
Contain an unknown toxin that can damage the kidneys. There have been no problem associated with grape seed extract.
Human Vitamin & Supplements containg iron:-
Can damage the lining of the digestive system and toxic to the other organ including liver and kidney .
Large amount of liver:-
Can cause Vitamin A toxicity, which affects muscles and bones. Although it can be given once or twice a week, but giving meat organs(chicken liver) as an everyday food can result in kidney and liver related problems.
Milk and other dairy products :-
Many dogs have lactose-intolerance.Some adult dogs and cats do not have sufficient amount of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the lactose in milk. This can result in diarrhea.
Lactose free milk products are available for pets. Although if your pet loves milk, its advisable to give diluted milk (half milk half water).

Mushrooms :-
Can contain toxins, which may effect multiple systems in the body, cause shock and result in death.
Onions & garlic :-
Contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anemia.Cats are more susceptible than dogs.Garlic is less toxic than onion.
Potato & tomato leaves :-
Contain oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, & or potatoe & tomato stems urinary systems. This is more of a problem in livestock. Potato can be given to dogs who are following vegetaien diet,or a dog suffering from kidney failure coz even doctors suggest the same in balance quantity for renal disorders and your dog also would love it.
Raw Eggs :-
Contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin(a B vitamin). This can lead to skin and hair coat problems.
Raw fish :-
Can result in a thiamine(a B vitamin) deficiency leading to loss of appetite, seizures, and in severe cases even death.
Salt :-
If eaten in large quantities it may lead to electrolyte imbalances. Also remember dogs with kidney disorder are often suggested by vets to completely avoid salt, therefore
to avoid such an extreme stage, just add a pinch of salt to taste to their food.

Sugary foods :-
Can lead to obesity, dental problems, and possibly diabetes mellitus.Make sure its only given as treat in rare occassions in small quantity.Though ice creams are suggested by Docs, that too should be in restricted quantity or when the dog is vommitting.
Xylitol(artificial sweetener):-
Can cause liver failure.Since its advised not to give sugary food please do not resolve to low cal sugar,i had rather suggest to give normal sugar in negligeable quantity.Remember all the chewing gums, candies, has xylitol.
*Avoid feeding your dog table scraps(which is fine in our digestive system but not the same with them, mentioned above)it encourages and may not be good for his or her digestive system(frankly my babies were use to fed by me from my plate as if it was their fundamental right to demand when i am eating, but it only lead to their health problems,i wasnt aware,so i am making you aware, dont worry they are fine)If you must give her " people food" make sure you are not overfeeding him or her for the day,it should not be mid-night or any odd hour of the day(time close by to their own feeding time).I still do feed my babies from my plate(bad habbits easy to develop hard to give up) but i make sure on what i am giving them is not slowly going to take them away from me forever,so i at times end up eating food which is good for them and edible for me as well, lol,or if not i better hide and eat !!!
For afternoon and night you can give khichdi with vegetables(its good if you boil the vegetables separately,so its more crunchy)along with boneless chicken or mutton(note that red meat causes obesity,so stick to white meat),at times add soyabeans or paneer(panner again is a dairy product therefore not much to be given),as you boil the chicken put a dash of salt so it can be mixed with khichdi.Chappati can be given, just smash the chappatis with boil chicken & a dash of salt. Also fish can be given but be very careful if even one bone of the fish goes, there is no way you can save the dog,so only if you are sure get fish that has only one bone so you can easily remove it.Do not give rotis too often, though i know you dog loves it,restrict it to once a week.
For morning and or evening you can give diluted milk(as mentioned above) with dalliya(consult the vet if your dog is suffering from kidney disorder,as dalliya could be heavy to digest)though it is good for anemic dogs, also for summer you can add sabza with milk.Do not give parle-G or any othet Glucose biscuits,if you want to give biscuits please prefer light biscuits like marie or just avoid it if your dog has kidney problem.
Personally i prefer home -cooked food over packed food as the best way to know what goes into your dogs stomach is to make it yourself.Always keep fresh water available for your dog to drink, thats one thing you just dont have to deprive him of!!!
Happy & Responsible Petting!!!
